Which grade should you aim for?

It depends who is reading. Pick an audience above the grade and Spare sets the target for you: grade 8 for general writing and email, 9 for blog posts, 6 for interface copy, 4 for children and 11 for technical documents.

Aiming low is not dumbing down. A lower grade means shorter sentences and familiar words, which busy experts appreciate as much as anyone.

How the grade is worked out

Spare's main grade is the Automated Readability Index. It counts the letters per word and the words per sentence, so it gives the same answer every time and does not depend on guessing syllables.

The Flesch-Kincaid grade and Flesch Reading Ease score are shown alongside for comparison. They weigh syllables instead of letters and usually land close to the main grade.
