Readability is how much effort a reader spends getting your meaning. Two things drive most of it: how long your sentences are, and how long your words are. Spare measures both and turns them into a reading grade.
A grade of 8 means someone with eight years of schooling can follow the text comfortably. That is the level most people prefer to read at, experts included, because it is quick.
Start with the sentences marked very hard. Splitting one long sentence into two does more for your grade than any other edit.
Then look at single words: adverbs that prop up a weak verb, qualifiers that soften your point, passive verbs that hide who did what, and complex words that have a plainer twin. Hover over any highlight to see why it was marked.
